HAVERFORD, Pa. - It was a cruel ending to a breakthrough season for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (8-10, 5-5) as the Garnet -- needing a victory to advance to the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time since 2000 -- fell to rival Haverford by the score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon from Swann Field.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Beth Johnson's goal in the 25th minute and a stellar performance from the defense lifted the Swarthmore College field hockey team (6-7, 3-4) to a 1-0 victory over McDaniel (8-4, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field. The important win in regards to the Centennial Conference standings marks the first time the Garnet has defeated the Green Terror since 2006. The win also marks Garnet's first shutout since October 13th 2010 against Muhlenberg.

Field Hockey Dominates Dickinson 4-2 For First Conference Win
Carlisle, Pa. – Junior midfielder Sophia Agathis scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Capone made 10 saves as the Garnet (2-4, 1-2 CC) defeated Dickinson 4-2. After dominating the first 10 minutes of play and outshooting Swarthmore 4-1, the Red Devils nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute. After a scramble in the penalty circle, a controversial penalty stroke was issued to Dickinson’s Tanya Bellingham when it was ruled that Capone had completely covered the ball with her body.

Six Swarthmore Student-Athletes Named to Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team
Lancaster, Pa. - Six Swarthmore student-athletes have been named to the 2010 Fall All-Centennial Sportsmanship Team, the Conference announced on Wednesday morning. The Centennial Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) established the All-Sportsmanship team in 2007. Each team elected a member from their squad who displayed good sportsmanship throughout the season to be selected to the All-Centennial sportsmanship team.

For the Garnet, who have won three of four games, the sixth win of the season is the most by any field hockey squad since head coach Lauren Fuchs took over in 2008. SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Despite the loss of five seniors from last year’s squad, the Swarthmore College field hockey team has plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into the 2009 season. All of the optimism stems from a productive offseason that saw the Garnet develop a dynamic new offensive attack while stressing more emphasis on improving defensive fundamentals.
